Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri and Egypt’s Omar
Assar will renew their rivalry at the 2016 International Table Tennis
Federation’s Top 16 Cup in Khartoum, Sudan.
The ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup will take place from February 14 to 15. It is a tournament which features the 16
top-ranked players from the continent, according to the African Table
Tennis Federation. It features 15 top-ranked players and one player from
the host country.
And 2014 ITTF Star Player of The Year,
Quadri, will aim to re-enact the form which saw him win the Top 16 Cup
in 2014 in Lagos before dominating the continent that year. He however
lost his title to Assar in 2015.
Nigeria will also be represented at the
competition by Segun Toriola, who has played in the Olympics six times,
Funke Oshonaike and Portugal-based Edem Offiong.
Having claimed three titles in 2015, the
Egyptian duo Assar and Dina Meshref top the list of invited players for
the two-day tournament to be staged at the International Conference
Centre in Khartoum. They are joined by El Sayed Lashin and Nadeen El
Dawlataly.
Congo’s trio Suraju Saka, Han Xing and Onyinyechi Nwachukwu are the other leading contestants at the tournament.
Winners in the men and women’s events will represent the continent at the 2016 men and women’s World Cups.
